Lebanon Inflation Rate at 5.55 percent  
Consumer prices in Lebanon rose 5.55 percent year-on-year in January 2018, accelerating from a 5.01 percent increase in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since June 2013, as prices advanced faster for: housing and utilities (5.41 percent vs 4.09 percent in December 2017); health (4.74 percent vs 4.62 percent); education (3.75 percent vs 3 percent); clothing and footwear (24.59 percent vs 17.43 percent), and furniture and household equipment (3.74 percent vs 4.65 percent). Meantime, prices slowed for both food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.40 percent vs 3.69 percent) and transportation (4.92 percent vs 5.89 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged up 0.05 percent compared to a 0.83 percent gain in December.

The BLOM Lebanon PMI increased to 47.1 in January of 2018 from 46.1 in the previous month. Still, the reading pointed to a deterioration in private sector activity, although at a slower pace. Output and new orders decreased less as new exports orders fell at the slowest rate in 11 months. In addition, employment was unchanged, following job cuts in the past two years. On the price front, input inflation, was the highest since 2013 due to the implementation of a higher VAT rate. As a result, output prices were the highest since 2014. Meantime, expectations for private sector activity remained negative.
