Consumer prices in Lebanon rose 4.3 percent year-on-year in May of 2017, following a 4.4 percent gain in the prior month. It was the lowest inflation rate since December of 2016, as prices rose at a slower pace for transport (4.1 percent vs 5.3 percent in April), housing (4.6 percent vs 5.6 percent) and clothing and footwear (15.1 percent vs 15.4 percent). In contrast, cost accelerated for food and non-alcoholic beverages (5.3 percent vs 4.4 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged down 0.05 percent.

The reading pointed to the strongest contraction in Lebanese private sector since October last year, as output and new orders declined at faster rates. Also, employment and purchases went down, but at the slowest pace in 3 months. On the price front, overall input cost dropped for the first time in 5 months and average prices charged decreased at a slightly faster rate than in April. Meanwhile, business confidence reached a record low in 4 years, with firms reporting the continuation of the difficult operating environment.
