Greece Posts Smallest Trade Deficit in Over Four Years

The trade deficit in Greece narrowed to EUR 2.1 billion in August 2025 from EUR 2.6 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, as imports fell more than exports.

This marked the smallest trade gap since May 2021 as imports dropped by 13% year-on-year to EUR 5.5 billion, weighed down by reduced purchases from both the EU (-2.4%) and non-EU countries (-22.6%).

Meanwhile, exports decreased by 8.9% to EUR 3.4 billion amid sharp declines in sales to both the EU (-7.7%) and non-EU countries (-10.3%).

Considering January-August, the country’s trade gap narrowed to EUR 21.7 billion from EUR 22.2 billion in the same period last year.

The trade deficit in Greece widened slightly to EUR 3.6 billion in December 2025 from a revised EUR 3.5 billion in the same month a year ago. This was the largest trade gap since November 2022, as imports rose more than exports. Imports grew by 1.5% year-on-year to EUR 7.7 billion, driven mainly by increased purchases from the EU (9.1%), which more than offset a drop in imports from third countries (-7.9%). Meanwhile, exports increased by 0.7% to EUR 4.1 billion due to higher sales to the EU (11.8%), while shipments to the third countries declined (-11.5%). For the whole year of 2025, the country's trade gap narrowed to EUR 33.5 billion from EUR 35.6 billion in 2024, with exports (-2.8%) falling less than imports (-4.1%).

Greece Posts Smaller Trade Gap in November
The trade deficit in Greece shrank to EUR 2.8 billion in November 2025 from the revised EUR 3.3 billion in the corresponding month last year, as exports increased slightly while imports slumped. Exports went up by 0.4% year-on-year to EUR 4.1 billion, as higher shipments to non-EU countries (+4.8%), primarily mineral fuels and lubricants, more than offset declines to the EU (-2.9%). Conversely, imports dropped 6.6% to EUR 6.9 billion, on the back of lower purchases from both the non-EU countries (-11.4%) and the EU (-2.4%).

The trade deficit in Greece narrowed to EUR 2.7 billion in October 2025 from EUR 3.3 billion in the corresponding month last year, as exports rose while imports dropped. Exports grew by 5.8% year-on-year to EUR 4.3 billion, driven by higher sales to both the EU (4.5%) and third countries (7.5%). Meanwhile, imports dropped by 5% to EUR 6.9 billion, weighed down by declines in arrivals from both the EU (-2.1%) and third countries (8.7%). Over the January-October period, the trade deficit narrowed to EUR 27.1 billion from 28.8 billion in the same month of the previous year.
