Costa Rica GDP Annual Growth Eases in Q2 2025

Costa Rica’s GDP expanded 5.2% year-on-year in Q2 2025, accelerating from a downwardly revised 3.7% in Q1. Growth strengthened in utilities (9.5% vs 4.5%), trade (3.5% vs 2.5%), transport (6.1% vs 5.8%), information and communication (4.3% vs 3.2%), and financial and insurance activities (5.9% vs 5.2%). By contrast, construction remained in contraction (-2.1% vs -3.5%), while agriculture, forestry, and fishing slipped into decline (-2.3% vs 1.1%).

Costa Rica’s GDP expanded 3.9% year-on-year in Q2 2025, easing slightly from an upwardly revised 4.1% in Q1. Growth slowed in construction (0.3% vs 2.5%), financial services (5.1% vs 5.8%), commerce (2.5% vs 2.6%) and public administration (1.1% vs 1.4%). Also, output contracted further in agriculture, fishing and forestry (-3.4% vs -3.9%). In contrast, activity accelerated in manufacturing (10.2% vs 8.0%), utilities (2.6% vs 2.2%), information and communications (4.8% vs 4.0%), and education, healthcare and social security (2.6% vs 2.5%).

Costa Rica’s GDP grew by 3.9% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, slowing from a 4.3% expansion in the preceding quarter. Growth accelerated in education and human health and social care (2.3% vs 2.0% in Q4 2024) and wholesale & retail trade (2.8% vs. 2.7%), while it rebounded for electricity, water & sanitation services (1.4% vs -2.4%). Conversely, production moderated in manufacturing (5.8% vs 6.3%), construction (2.8% vs 4.4%), transport and storage (5.4% vs 7.2%), accommodation and food services activities (0.1% vs 1.4%), information and communications (4.2% vs 5.5%), real estate (2.6% vs 3.4%), and financial and insurance activities (5.7% vs 5.8%). Meanwhile, the mining and quarrying sector contracted (-2.3% vs. 0.5%). On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the economy grew by 0.2%, easing from 1.6% in the previous period.
