Consumer prices in Costa Rica increased 0.91 percent year-on-year in August of 2017, easing from a 1.16 percent rise in the previous month. It is the lowest inflation rate since January, led by a slowdown in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.14 percent vs 2.18 percent in July); transport (0.92 percent vs 0.97 percent) and miscellaneous goods and services (1.77 percent vs 2.04 percent). Also, cost of rent and housing services declined further (-0.53 percent vs -0.34 percent). In contrast, prices rose faster for furniture and household equipment (0.27 percent vs 0.16 percent); restaurants and hotels (1.62 percent vs 1.55 percent); recreation and culture (1.07 percent vs 0.99 percent); education (3.89 percent vs 3.85 percent) and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (3.70 percent vs 2.93 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.22 percent, following a 0.32 percent increase in July.

Costa Rica GDP Annual Growth Rate at 3.59 percent  
Costa Rica's economy advanced 3.6 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, slowing from a 4.2 percent expansion in the previous period. The slowdown was mainly explained by softer growth in primary activity (2.1 percent vs 8.8 percent in the previous quarter), construction (1.3 percent vs 5.9 percent), commerce (3.6 percent vs 4.4 percent), information & communications (6.8 percent vs 7.6 percent), and financial and insurance activities (4.4 percent vs 7.3 percent). Meanwhile, mining activity contracted by 2.0 percent after expanding by 1.9 percent in the previous quarter. Utilities also contributed negatively, declining at a faster pace of 2.7 percent (vs -1.7 percent in the preceding period). Contrastingly, faster growth was observed in manufacturing (5.1 percent vs 4.1 percent) and transport (5.2 percent vs 2.6 percent). On a quarterly basis, the GDP expanded 3 percent.
