Brunei’s annual inflation increased 0.2 percent in June of 2018 after a decline of 0.1 percent in the previous month. Prices rose faster for: restaurants & hotels (1.2 pct vs 0.2 pct in May); health (2.5 pct vs 0.6 pct); communication (1.0 pct vs 0.9 pct), and miscellaneous goods & services (0.7 pct vs -0.7 pct). Also, cost dropped less for clothing & footwear (-4.5 percent vs -6.5 pct), and furnishing, household equipment & routine maintenance (-0.2 pct vs -1.2 pct). Meanwhile, prices slowed for food & non-alcoholic beverages (1.9 pct vs 2.6 pct) and inflation was steady for education (at 1.8 pct). Additionally, prices continued to decrease for transport (-1.0 pct vs -0.9 pct in May); housing & utilities (-0.7 pct, the same pace as in June) and recreation & culture (-0.7 pct vs -0.5 pct); On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.4 percent, following a 0.2 percent rise in May.

Imports jumped 40.1 percent year-on-year to BND 481.6 million, due to a surge in purchases of machinery and transport equipment (128.3 percent); chemicals (45.5 percent), and manufactured goods (20.5 percent). The highest share of imports came from China (35.8 percent), Malaysia (14.6 percent), Singapore (11.9 percent), and the UK (9.5 percent). Considering January to May, the trade balance recorded a BND 1,543.2 million surplus compared to a BND 1,609.7 million surplus in the same period of 2017.

Brunei's economy advanced 2.5 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018, following a 5.2 percent growth in the previous period. Net exports contributed positively to GDP growth as exports increased by 6.9 percent (vs 18.6 percent in Q4) and imports by 5.5 percent (vs 0.2 percent). Also, household expenditure grew at a softer pace (0.2 percent vs 6.2 percent). On the other hand, fixed investment grew faster (21 percent vs 16.7 percent in Q4), while government spending rebounded (1.3 percent vs -7.2 percent in Q4). On a quarterly basis, the GDP showed no growth, compared to a 3.8 percent expansion in the fourth quarter.
