Imports to Brunei surged 11 percent year-on-year to BND 479.1 million in August 2018, as purchases jumped for machinery & transport equipment (87.4 pct); food (21.3 pct) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (53.3 pct). Brunei trade surplus widened 170.4 percent year-on-year to BND 283.1 million in August 2018 from BND 104.7 million in the same month of the previous year. Exports soared 42.1 percent year-on-year to BND 762.2 million, driven by higher sales of mineral fuels (46.3 pct); chemicals (43.1 pct) and food (140 pct). Main export partners were Japan (44.6 pct of total), Thailand (12.6 pct), the US (9.2 pct) and India (7.8 pct). Brunei Inflation Rate at 0.40 percent  
Brunei’s annual inflation edged up to 0.4 percent in September 2018 from 0.3 percent in the previous month and marking the second straight month of increase. Main upward pressure mainly came from food & non-alcoholic beverages (1.6 pct vs 2.2 pct in August); transport (0.2 pct vs -0.1 pct) and recreation & culture (1.2 pct vs 1.4 pct). Also, prices fell less for clothing & footwear (-0.2 pct vs -4.7 pct) while inflation was stable for education (at 1.7 pct). In contrast, cost continued to fall for housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels (-0.6 pct, the same as in the prior month) and furnishing, household equipment & routine maintenance (-0.8 pct). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.3 percent, following a 0.1 percent rise in August.

Brunei GDP Annual Growth Rate at -2.80 percent  
Brunei's economy shrank 2.8 percent year-on-year in the three months to June of 2018, compared to an upwardly revised 2.6 percent growth in the previous period and marking the first contraction since the first quarter 2017. Net exports contributed negatively to GDP growth as exports declined by 0.7 percent (vs 7.0 percent in Q1), while imports jumped 21.4 percent (vs 5.5 percent). In addition, government spending contracted 5.1 percent, after a 1.3 percent rise in the March quarter. Meanwhile, private consumption grew 4.6 percent, following a 0.2 percent growth previously. Also, fixed investment grew faster (23.2 percent vs 21 percent). On a quarterly basis, the economy contracted 8.8 percent in the June quarter, following a 0.1 percent growth in the first quarter.
