Angola Q1 GDP Growth Strongest in Near 2 Years

Angola's economy expanded by 5.3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, accelerating slightly from a downwardly revised 5.1% increase in the previous quarter. It was the strongest growth since the second quarter of 2024, driven by non-oil activities. The non-oil sector grew 6.2%, while the oil sector contracted by 0.2%. Notable growth was recorded in several sectors, including information and communication (27.6%), transportation (16.1%), fishing and aquaculture (8.7%), electricity (8.2%), and manufacturing (7.3%). By contrast, accommodation and food services (-3.3%) and extraction and refining (-0.2%) both contracted. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the economy advanced 1.4%, following an upwardly revised 2.1% expansion in the fourth quarter. Last year, the GDP grew 3.1%, after a 5.0% expansion in 2024.

Angola's economy advanced by 5.7% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2025, quickening from an upwardly revised 2.6% rise in the previous period. This expansion, driven mainly by non-oil activities, marks the strongest quarterly performance since Q2 2023. The non-oil sector experienced a 7.34% expansion, representing 80.91% of GDP, whereas the oil sector contracted by 1.21%, accounting for 19.09% of the economy. Notable growth was recorded in some activities such as information and communication sector (+65.7%), accommodation & food services activities (+18%) and manufacturing (+16.5%). By contrast, oil extraction and refining (-1.2% vs -6.9%), along with diamond and metallic mineral extraction (-7% vs 2.1%), acted as drags on overall growth. Angola's economic growth reached 3.1% in 2025, compared to the revised 4.95% in 2024.

The annual economic growth in Angola accelerated to 1.8% in Q3 2025, up from 1.1% in the previous three-month period, which had been the softest expansion since Q4 2024, when GDP recorded a contraction. The acceleration was mainly driven by the non-oil sector (4.1% vs 3.4% in Q2). The information and communication sector was the strongest performer, surging 55.67% (vs 38.1% in Q2) and contributing 0.97 percentage points to GDP growth. Other sectors that posted significant growth included accommodation and food services (13.6% vs 8%), commerce (3.3% vs 6.5%), manufacturing (13.0% vs 5.2%), and diamond and metallic mineral extraction (1.0% vs 6.8%). Meanwhile, the oil sector contracted by 7.8%, due to a 10.7% decline in oil extraction, which represented 93.08% of the sector’s weight. On a quarterly basis, GDP edged up 0.05% in Q3, following a revised 0.08% contraction in the previous period.
