Tanzania Inflation Rate Hovers at 2023-Highs

The annual inflation rate in Tanzania came in at 4% in June 2026, little changed from May's 4.2%, which was the steepest since April 2023.

Upward pressure came mostly from prices of transportation (13.6% vs 11.9% in May); food & non-alcoholic beverges & tobacco (4.1% vs 5.6%) and personal care, social protection and miscellaneous & goods services (3.6% vs 3.5%).

The smallest increases were seen for insurance & financial services (0.2% vs 0.2%); recreation, sport & culture (0.5% vs 0.7%) and information & communication (0.9% vs 0.9%).

On a monthly basis, the CPI edged up by 0.1%, after a 0.2% increase in the previous month.

Tanzania Inflation Rate Up for 2nd Month
The annual inflation rate in Tanzania edged up to 4.2% in May 2026 from 4% in the prior month, marking the highest level since April 2023. Upward pressure came primarily from prices of transportation (11.9% vs 9.2% in April) and food & non-alcoholic beverages (5.6% vs 5.7%); alongside miscellaneous goods & services (3.5% vs 3.5%) and education (2.7% vs 2.6%). Meanwhile, prices slowed down for some CPI items, including housing & utilities (0.7% vs 1.7%); health (1.4% vs 1.6%) and clothing & footwear (1.5% vs 1.6%). On a monthly basis, the CPI rose by 0.2%, following a 1.3% increase in the month before.

The annual inflation rate in Tanzania climbed to 4% in April 2026 from 3.2% in each of the previous two months, reaching its highest level since May 2023. Main upward pressure came from prices of transportation (9.2% vs 4% in March); food & non-alcoholic beverages (5.7% vs 5.7%); education (2.6% vs 0.3%) and miscellaneous goods & services (3.5% vs 3.2%). On a monthly basis, the CPI rose by 1.3%, the most since March 2019, after a 0.8% increase in the month before.
