The Central Bank of Jamaica lowered its benchmark interest rate by 25 bps to 2.5 percent at its May 17th of 2018 meeting. Policymakers said the current policy stance is in line with inflation expectations: inflation over the next three quarters is seen falling slightly below the lower limit of the 4-6 percent target, before increasing towards the centre of the target in the following quarter. The outlook for inflation mainly reflects the impact of lower agricultural food cost while upside risks include higher oil prices and adverse weather. In April 2018, the inflation rate fell further to 3.2 percent from 3.9 percent in March. Finally, economic growth is seen accelerating modestly.

It was the slowest inflation since January 2017, mainly explained by lower inflation for food & non-alcoholic beverages (3.9 percent vs 4.1 percent in February), utilities (2.9 percent vs 3.8 percent), and transport (2.8 percent vs 3.7 percent). In contrast, prices of clothing & footwear increased 2.5 percent after a 2.3 percent climb in the previous month. On a monthly basis, consumer prices declined 0.4 percent after edging down 0.1 percent in the previous two months.

On a quarterly basis, the GDP shrank 0.6%. For full 2017, the economy grew 0.5% after a 1.4% expansion in 2016.
