Jamaica Interest Rate at 2.00 percent
The Bank of Jamaica left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 2.0 percent at its August meeting, saying inflation is likely to rise towards the lower end of the target of 4.0 per cent to 6.0 per cent by the March 2019 quarter and approach the middle of the target range thereafter. The annual inflation rate increased to 3.2 percent in July 2018, the most in four months, following a 2.8 percent rise June. Policymakers said that its outlook for inflation for the rest of 2018 and the first part of 2019 is largely predicated on an expected increase in agricultural prices, oil prices remaining elevated and higher domestic GDP growth, the latter driven in part by the accommodative monetary conditions. Finally, it was explained that the increasingly signs of a pick-up in the rate of expansion in private sector credit and the resulting rise in economic activity should support inflation returning to the target of 4.0 per cent to 6.0 per cent.
