The annual inflation in Jamaica eased to 2.4 percent in December 2018 from 4.1 percent in the previous month, hitting its lowest level in two years. The sharp downturn was mainly explained by a drop in inflation for utilities (4.7 percent vs 7.4 percent), food & beverages (2.3 percent vs 4.7 percent), transport (1.0 percent vs 2.7 percent), and clothing (2.1 percent vs 2.6 percent). In contrast, inflation for liquor & tobacco edged up to 1.4 percent from 1.3 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 1.0 percent after remaining unchanged in the previous month.

The economy of Jamaica expanded 1.8 percent year-on-year in Q3 2018, lower than the 2.2 percent expansion for the previous quarter. It was still the second-highest growth rate in the last eight quarters. The slowdown against the second quarter was mainly explained by: primary activity (unchanged vs +12.5 percent in Q2); manufacturing (-0.3 percent vs +0.2 percent); food, beverages & tobacco (+0.1 percent vs +2.5 percent); utilities (-0.1 percent vs +1.0 percent); transport & communication services (+1.4 percent vs +1.6 percent), and financial services (+0.7 percent vs +1.2 percent). In contrast, construction expanded 3.7 percent after growing 2.9 percent. On a quarterly basis, the economy grew 1.1 percent, after expanding 1.6 percent in the previous three months.
