Georgia Producer Prices Change at 5.70 percent  
Georgia's producer prices increased 5.7 percent from a year earlier in April 2019, the most since October last year, following a 5.4 percent advance in the previous month. Main upward pressure came from: manufacturing (6.7 percent), in particular food products, beverages and tobacco (7.8 percent), basic metals and fabricated metal products (4.9 percent) and pulp, paper and paper products, recorded media, printing services (16.6 percent). In addition, mining & quarrying cost went up 4.2 percent and electrical energy, gas, steam and hot water prices rose 0.9 percent. On a monthly basis, producer prices increased 0.2 percent.

Georgia Inflation Rate at 4.10 percent  
The annual inflation rate in Georgia increased to 4.1 percent in April 2019 from 3.7 percent in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since January last year, as prices rose further for food & non-alcoholic beverages (5.9 percent vs 4.8 percent in March); transport (2.3 percent vs 1.7 percent); recreation & culture (7.2 percent vs 6.7 percent); education (2.5 percent vs 2.4 percent); and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (21.1 percent vs 20.8 percent). Also, cost of clothing & footwear fell less (-7.6 percent vs -10.1 percent). Meanwhile, prices eased for housing & utilities (1.7 percent vs 2.2 percent); furniture & household equipment (a flat reading vs 0.2 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (0.7 percent vs 0.8 percent); and health (3.2 percent vs 3.6 percent). Additionally, inflation was steady for restaurant & hotels (0.6 percent, the same as in April). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.2 percent, slowing from a 1.0 percent gain in March.

The National Bank of Georgia left its refinancing rate unchanged at 6.5 percent on May 1st 2019, after a 25bps cut in the March meeting. Policymakers kept borrowing costs at its lowest since December of 2016 mentioning a stable inflation rate around the target level of 3 percent. In March, annual inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 3.7 percent from 2.3 percent in February. The central bank added that the normalization of monetary policy will be carried out gradually.

The Georgian economy grew 4.5 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2018, following a 3.7 percent expansion in the previous period. The growth accelerated for wholesale & retail trade (6.1% vs 2.4% in Q3 2018); hotels & restaurants (16.1% vs 7.4%); communication (10.0% vs 8.9%); and agriculture (5.4% vs 3.8%). In addition, output rebounded for both public administration (1.2% vs -2.9%) and manufacturing (0.5% vs -2.3%). On the other hand, output slowed for mining and quarrying (3.2% vs 6.2%); financial intermediation (8.6% vs 15.0%); transport (12.6% vs 16.2%) and real estate activities (10.7% vs 13.4%). Meanwhile, contractions were seen in electricity, gas, and water supply (-8.4% vs 0.9%) and construction (-2.4% vs -9.2%). For 2018 as a whole, the economy expanded 4.7 percent, easing from a 4.8 percent advance in 2017.
