Botswana Interest Rate at 5.00 percent  
The central bank of Botswana cut its benchmark interest rate by 50bps to 5 percent on October 24th 2017. It is the first rate cut since July of 2016, bringing borrowing cost to the lowest since at least 2008 when the medium-term target range for the inflation was set at 3 - 6 percent. Policymakers said the rate cut aims to support economic activity without undermining inflation. The inflation fell to 3.2 percent in September from 3.4 percent in August.

Botswana Inflation Rate at 3.00 percent  
Consumer prices in Botswana increased 3.0 percent year-on-year in October of 2017, easing from a 3.2 percent rise in the previous month. It is the lowest rate since December of 2016, as prices advanced at a slower pace for: food & non-alcoholic beverages (2.4 percent compared to 2.8 percent in September); housing & utilities (5.7 percent compared to 5.8 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (2.4 percent compared to 2.8 percent); alcoholic beverages, tobacco & narcotics (4.1 percent compared to 5.0 percent) and clothing & footwear (2.9 percent compared to 3.0 percent). Meantime, inflation remained steady for transport (1.7 percent); furnishings & household equipment (3.1 percent); communication (1.3 percent) and education (4.2 percent), while prices rose at a faster pace for health (2.1 percent compared to 2.0 percent) and restaurants & hotels (3.8 percent compared to 3.7 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices were flat after increasing 0.1 percent in the prior month.

On the other hand, growth advanced at a slower pace for agriculture (1.2 percent compared to 1.5 percent). Mining continued to contract (-13.8 percent compared to -28.9 percent) due to closure of copper and nickel mines. On a quarterly basis, the GDP expanded 1.9 percent, after a 0.2 increase in Q1.
