Botswana Inflation Rate at 3.10 percent  
Consumer prices in Botswana advanced 3.1 percent year-on-year in January of 2018, easing from a 3.2 percent gain in the prior month. Prices slowed for: food & non-alcoholic beverages (0.4 percent from 1.1 percent in December); alcoholic beverages, tobacco & narcotics (2.4 percent from 3.4 percent) and furnishings & household equipment (2.2 percent from 2.4 percent). Additionally, cost increased at a softer pace for clothing & footwear (2.1 percent from 2.5 percent); health (1.4 percent from 1.9 percent) and restaurants & hotels (3.4 percent from 3.9 percent). Meanwhile, prices rose faster for transport (5.0 percent from 4.1 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (3.0 percent from 2.8 percent) and education (5.5 percent from 4.2 percent). Also, inflation was steady for housing & utilities (5.8 percent, the same as in December) and communication (1.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.4 percent, unchanged from the previous month.

The economy of Botswana advanced 1.2 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2017, following a downwardly revised 0.9 percent expansion in the previous period. Output rebounded for mining (4.4 percent compared to -13.8 percent), namely diamond and other mining. In addition, output increased for: general government (1.9 percent compared to 1.8 percent in Q2); construction (3.5 percent compared to 3.3 percent); manufacturing (3.3 percent compared to a flat reading); agriculture (2.0 percent compared to 1.1 percent) and utilities (15.7 percent compared to 7.2 percent), mainly due to electricity production. Meanwhile, growth advanced at a softer pace for finance (4.8 percent compared to 5.5 percent); social services (2.7 percent compared to 2.8 percent) and transport (4.5 percent compared to 6.0 percent) and fell for trade, hotels and restaurants (-9.3 percent compared to 2.5 percent). On a quarterly basis, the GDP contracted 0.9 percent, after a 1.9 increase in Q2.
