Medium Market ImpactUS Job Cuts Hit a Three-Year Low for October
United States·Challenger Job Cuts

US-based employers announced 43,994 job cuts in October 2026, up 2% from 43,281 cuts in September, but down 71% from last year and the lowest for an October month since 2023. It is the eighth month this year in which cuts came in below the same month one year earlier. Food companies led all industries in the amount of cuts (9,677), followed by technology (5,576) and services (5,458). Through October, employers have announced 617,189 job cuts, down 44% year-on-year. It is the lowest year-to-date total through October since 2022, when 243,338 cuts were announced. The tech sector leads all industries with 171,501 cuts up 21% yoy. “This is a low-fire environment. Employers are holding on to the workers they have heading into the holidays, and the hiring they are announcing is largely short-term, seasonal work. Companies want the flexibility to meet holiday demand without adding permanent headcount,” said Andy Challenger, from Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

US Job Cuts Fall in September
United States·Challenger Job Cuts

US-based employers announced 43,281 job cuts in September 2026, down from 52,881 in August and 54,064 last year. It is the lowest total for the month since 2022. The tech sector announced the most cuts (10,799), followed by food (7,326) and services (3,306). "Companies are in a wait-and-see period right now. Employers are facing high energy costs, an uncertain war in Iran, a rate hike that could make hiring more expensive, plus the likelihood of surging healthcare costs. We’ve seen layoff activity subside over this year, and September continues to illustrate this point,” said Andy Challenger from Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Meanwhile, Q3 layoff plans totaled 129,591, down 43% from the 226,242 layoff plans in Q2 2026. Through September, employers have announced 573,195 job cuts, down 39% from the 946,426 cuts announced in the first nine months of 2025. The tech sector lead with 165,925 cuts.

United States·Challenger Job Cuts

US-based employers announced 45,849 job cuts in June 2026, the lowest since December 2025, down 53% from May and 4% lower than in the same month last year. The tech sector announced the most cuts (15,503), followed by services (4,296), food producers and manufacturers (3,955) and health care companies (2,761). Medium Market ImpactUS Job Cuts Rise in May
United States·Challenger Job Cuts

US-based employers announced 97,006 job cuts in May 2026, the most since January, compared to 83,387 in April. It is the highest May total since 2020 and also marks the third straight month that cuts have risen. AI was the main reason for the cuts, leading for a third straight month. Technology announced 38,242 job cuts in May, the highest monthly total for the sector since August 2024. Transportation (6,909), services (6,288) and fintech (5,731) followed. “On top of the headline AI story, we’re seeing a sharp rise in cuts tied to acquisitions and mergers and a jump in bankruptcy-related losses, which tells me companies are restructuring aggressively as they reposition for an AI-driven economy,” said Andy Challenger from Challenger, Gray & Christmas. So far this year, employers have announced 397,755 cuts, down 43% from last year, when reductions to the federal workforce drove totals to historic highs. Stripping out that distortion, 2026 is running roughly even with 2024.

They are also often citing AI spend and innovation. Regardless of whether individual jobs are being replaced by AI, the money for those roles is,” said Andy Challenger from Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Medium Market ImpactJob Cuts in the US Fall Sharply in February
United States·Challenger Job Cuts

US-based employers announced 48,307 job cuts in February 2026, less than 108,435 in January and well below 172,017 a year earlier. Tech announced the most cuts (11,039), as "tech is responding to a number of pressures right now. Education followed with 5,417 job cuts and industrial manufacturing announced 4,109 cuts. “With US involvement in a growing war in Iran, the end of Q1 may bring more layoff plans as companies tighten belts amid uncertainty and higher costs,” Andy Challenger added. The tech sector led job cuts so far this year (33.330), followed by transportation (31,702) and health care/products (19,228).

United States·Challenger Job Cuts

US-based employers announced 108,435 job cuts in January 2026, the highest level since October and the largest January total since 2009, compared to 33,553 cuts announced in December. “Generally, we see a high number of job cuts in Q1, but this is a high total for January. It means most of these plans were set at the end of 2025, signaling employers are less-than-optimistic about the outlook for 2026,” said Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer for Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Transportation announced the highest number (31,243), primarily due to UPS. The company announced it would cut 30K jobs after severing ties with Amazon. Technology announced 22,291 job cuts, with the bulk coming from Amazon (16K) as it restructures its layers of management. Healthcare companies and health products manufacturers announced 17,107 cuts, the most for the industry since April 2020. In 2025, employers announced 1,206,374 job cuts, an increase of 58% from 2024 and the highest total since 2020. Medium Market ImpactOctober US Job Cuts Reach 22-Year High
United States·Challenger Job Cuts

US-based employers announced 153,074 job cuts in October 2025, the highest total for the month since 2003, compared with 54,064 in September. Most layoffs occurred in the warehousing (47,878), tech (33,281), food (10,662) and government (7,883) sectors. “October’s pace of job cutting was much higher than average for the month. Some industries are correcting after the hiring boom of the pandemic, but this comes as AI adoption, softening consumer and corporate spending, and rising costs drive belt-tightening and hiring freezes. Those laid off now are finding it harder to quickly secure new roles, which could further loosen the labor market,” said Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer for Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Through October, employers have announced 1,099,500 job cuts, the highest year-to-date total since the pandemic, and up 44% from the 761,358 cuts announced in all of 2024. So far this year, government announced the most layoffs (307,638), followed by tech (141,159).

With rate cuts on the way, we may see some stabilizing in the job market in Q4, but other factors could keep employers planning layoffs or holding off hiring,” said Andy Challenger, Senior VP of Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

March 2025 figure is the third-highest monthly total ever recorded. “Job cut announcements were dominated last month by DOGE plans to eliminate positions in the federal government. The Government led all sectors in job cuts in March with 216,215, all of which occurred in the federal government. Over the last two months, DOGE actions have been attributed to 280,253 layoff plans of federal workers and contractors impacting 27 agencies, according to Challenger tracking.
