Consumer prices in Burundi decreased 2.9 percent year-on-year in March 2019, following a 4.1 percent fall in the previous month. It is the smallest annual decline in consumer prices since August last year, as prices fell less for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-7.7% vs -10.6% in February), mainly due to vegetables (-12.5% vs -17.3%); bread & cereals (-11.3% vs -12.2%); fish & seafood (6.1% vs 2.9%) and oils & fats (5% vs 2.7%). In addition, cost rose faster for clothing & footwear (4.3% vs 2.5%) and furnishings (3.4% vs 2.5%). Meanwhile, prices slowed mainly for housing & utilities (3.1% vs 5.3%); transport (2.3% vs 3.0%); miscellaneous goods & services (3% vs 5.7%) and recreation & culture (3.6% vs 4.0%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.7 percent, after dropping 1.1 percent in the previous month.
