Retail sales in Vietnam expanded 22.6 percent from a year earlier in May 2022, accelerating sharply from a 12.1 percent gain in the prior month and marking the sixth straight month of expansion, as consumption strengthened further following an improvement in COVID-19 situation. The latest figure also represented the steepest growth in retail trade since July 2015, boosted by a faster rise in sales of goods (18.3 percent vs 12.4 percent in April) and other services (15.1 percent vs 6.7 percent). At the same time, there was a pickup in sales of both accommodation and food services (69.3 percent vs 14.8 percent), travel (324.4 percent vs 49.4 percent). For the January to May period, retail sales went up 9.7 percent from the same period of 2021.

Vietnam Retail Sales Rise the Most in A Year
Retail sales in Vietnam increased by 12.1 percent from a year earlier in April 2022, accelerating from a 9.4 percent gain in the prior month and marking the fifth straight month of expansion. The latest figure also represented the steepest growth in retail trade since April 2021, as consumption strengthened following an acceleration in COVID-19 vaccinations. Sales increased faster foll all categories: goods (12.4 percent vs 10.7 percent in March), accommodation and food services (14.8 percent vs 5.9 percent), travel (49.4 percent vs 29.9 percent), and other services (6.7 percent vs 3.2 percent). For the January to April period, retail sales went up 6.5 percent from the same period of 2021.
