US Q2 Labor Productivity Growth Below Forecasts
Nonfarm business sector labor productivity in the US rose by an annualized 2.3 percent in the second quarter of 2021, easing from a 4.3 percent increase in the previous period and missing market expectations of 3.5 percent growth. Output advanced 7.9 percent (vs 8.4 percent in Q1) and hours worked increased 5.5 percent (vs 4.0 percent in Q1). Manufacturing sector labor productivity went up 6.9 percent (vs -1.3 percent in Q1), as output expanded 3.8 percent and hours worked decreased 2.9 percent. Although productivity also increased in both manufacturing subsectors, these gains reflected different underlying conditions. In the durable manufacturing sector, productivity grew by 4.6 percent as a contraction in output was outpaced by a decrease in hours worked. In contrast, nondurable manufacturing sector productivity increased 7.8 percent as output grew faster than hours worked. Year-on-year, labor productivity rose by 1.9 percent, the least since the first quarter of 2020.
