In Tanzania, the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) measures the change over time in the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services that are purchased by a representative sample of households. The index weights are based on expenditures of both urban and rural households in the 25 geographic regions. The most important categories in the NCPI are Food and Non Alcoholic Beverages (38.5 percent of total weight); Transport (12.5 percent); Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuel (11.6 percent); Clothing and Footwear (8.3 percent) and Furnishing, Housing Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House (6.3 percent). The index also includes: Communication (5.6 percent of total weight), Restaurants and Hotels (4.2 percent of total weight), Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (3.7 percent), Miscellaneous Goods and Services (3.1 percent), Health (2.9 percent), Recreation and Culture (1.6 percent) and Education (1.5 percent).

Prices advanced further mostly for food & non-alcoholic beverages (6.6% vs 6.5% in March); housing & utilities (3.9% vs 3.2%) and transportation (3.9% vs 2.9%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices were up 0.7%, after increasing 0.8% in the previous month.

Tanzania Inflation Rate Slows for 3rd Month
Tanzania’s annual inflation rate eased for the third straight month to 3.6 percent in March of 2022, from 3.7 percent in February reaching its lowest point since last June. Prices slowed mostly for transport (2.9 percent vs 3.7 percent in February); clothing & footwear (2.4 percent vs 2.8 percent); housing & utilities (3.2 percent vs 3.5 percent) and restaurants & hotels (2.4 percent vs 2.7 percent). Meanwhile, food prices continued to accelerate (6.5 percent vs 6.1 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased by 0.8 percent, up from a 0.6 percent rise in the prior month.
