In Spain, the most important categories in the consumer price index are food and non-alcoholic beverages (20 percent of the total weight), transport (15 percent), housing and utilities (13 percent) and hotels, cafés and restaurants (12 percent). The index also includes: Recreation and culture (9 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (7 percent); and clothing and footwear (7 percent). Furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; health; communications; alcoholic beverages and tobacco; and education account for the remaining 18 percent of total weight.

Annual inflation rate in Spain increased to 8.7% in May of 2022 from 8.3% in April, in line with preliminary estimates. The inflation accelerated again in May after slowing from a near 40-year high of 9.8% in April, with main upward pressure coming from cost of transport (14.9%); food and non-alcoholic beverages (11%); and hotels, cafes and restaurants (6.3%). On the other hand, a slowdown was seen in cost of housing (17.5%) and recreation and culture (2.3%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices jumped 0.8%, rebounding from a 0.2% drop in April.

Spain Inflation Rate Quickens in May
Spain’s annual inflation rate likely accelerated to 8.7 percent in May of 2022, from 8.3 percent in April and above market expectations of 8.3 percent, preliminary estimates showed. Main upward pressure should come from prices of food & non-alcoholic beverages. The annual core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as unprocessed food and energy products, is seen rising to 4.9 percent in May, the highest since October of 1995, from 4.4 percent in April. On a monthly basis, consumer prices are expected to rise by 0.8 percent, after a 0.2 percent decrease in April.
