In Spain, the Industrial Confidence Indicator (ICI) measures the level of optimism of entrepreneurs for the future development of industrial activity. The ICI is conducted based on the sample of 2500 enterprises representing different sizes, regions and sectors of Spanish economy. The response rate is around 60 percent. ICI is measured on a scale of -100 (extreme lack of confidence) to +100 (extreme confidence).

Spain Industrial Morale Rebounds in May
Spain’s industrial confidence indicator rebounded to 1.5 in May of 2022 from -0.6 in the previous month, as the Spanish economy continued to recover from supply shocks due to the war in Ukraine and the domestic truckers’ strike. Improvements in sentiment were mainly due to higher production expectations (6.5 vs 4.5 in April), while sentiment deteriorated for stock levels (14.6 vs 8.5) and new order levels (6.4 vs 8.5).

Spain Industrial Morale Falls in April
Spain’s industrial confidence indicator slumped to -0.6 in April of 2022, the lowest since June of 2021, from the downwardly revised 5.1 in the prior month. Declines in sentiment were due to lower levels of new orders (8.2 vs 13.6 in March), while improvements were seen for stock levels (14.6 vs 1.1) and production expectations (4.5 vs 2.6).

Spain’s industrial confidence indicator fell to 5.3 in March of 2022 from the downwardly revised record-high of 10 from the prior month. Declines were mainly due to the economic effects of the war in Ukraine through soaring prices of energy and gasoline. Future production expectations plunged (2.9 vs 13.6 in February), while slower gains were recorded for new orders (14.1 vs 13.9) and stock levels (1.1 vs -2.4).
