Retail sales in Portugal increased by 2.1 percent year-on-year in May of 2022, easing from a downwardly revised 4.5 percent rise in the previous month. It was the lowest growth in retail trade since July of 2021. Deceleration in sales were seen for non-food items (4.4 percent vs 11.3 percent in April), particularly textiles, clothing, footwear, and leather products (12.2 percent vs 43.2 percent), computer, tech equipment, and books (1.8 percent vs 10.5 percent), and pharmaceutical products (6.3 percent vs 14.6 percent). Meanwhile, sales of food, beverages, and tobacco declined at a slower rate (-0.1 percent vs -3.7 percent).
