Retail sales in Portugal increased 4.6 percent year-on-year in April of 2022, easing from a downwardly revised 12.8 percent advance in the previous month. It is the lowest growth in retail trade activity since October last year, as non-food sales slowed (11.5 percent vs 26 percent in March) particularly textiles, clothing, footwear, and leather products (44.1 percent vs 125.5 percent), household goods (17.4 percent vs 21.7 percent) and computers, tech equipment and books (11.3 percent vs 29.6 percent). In addition, sales of food, beverages & tobacco declined further (-3.6 percent vs -1.2 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales declined 3 percent, after a 2.4 percent gain in March.

Portugal Retail Sales Growth Slows in March
Portugal’s retail trade rose 12.9 percent year-on-year in March of 2022, easing from an upwardly revised 15.3 percent growth in February, which was the strongest in nine months. Sales grew at a softer pace for non-food products (31.1 percent vs 37.9 percent in February), particularly textiles, clothing, footwear, and leather products (125.9 percent vs 165.4 percent). Meanwhile, food products sales declined less (-1.1 percent vs -2.4 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales increased 2.5 percent, after a revised 3.1 percent rise in the previous month.
