Philippines Posts Budget Surplus for 1st Time in 22 Months
The government budget in the Philippines posted a surplus of PHP 4.94 billion in April 2022, shifting from a deficit of PHP 44.43 billion in the same month a year earlier. It was the first surplus in the government budget since June 2020, amid an improvement in the COVID-19 situation. Revenues jumped 19.19 percent to PHP 347.95 billion from PHP 291.92 billion a year ago, while spending rose at a softer 1.98 percent to PHP 343.01 billion from PHP 336.35 billion. Considering the first four months of the year, the country recorded a budget deficit of PHP 311.91 billion, smaller than a PHP 365.90 billion in the corresponding period of 2021.

Philippines declined to PHP 187.67 billion in March 2022 from PHP 191.44 billion in the same month a year earlier, amid easing COVID-19 restrictions. Spending rose 18.15 percent to PHP 481.55 billion from PHP 407.60 billion a year ago while revenues grew at a faster 35.95 percent to PHP 293.88 billion from PHP 260.73 billion. In the first quarter of the year, the government budget posted a deficit of PHP 316.85 billion. In 2021, the budget deficit increased to PHP 1,332.10 billion from PHP 1,371.45 billion in 2020.
