The annual inflation rate in Malawi decelerated for the second straight month to 8.9 percent in May of 2021. Food prices advanced 11 percent from a year earlier, down slightly from an 11.5 percent jump in the previous month. Meanwhile, non-food inflation ticked higher (7.1 percent vs 7 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 1.7 percent, following a 5.1 percent decline in the previous month.

Malawi March Inflation Rate at Near 1-Year High
The annual inflation rate in Malawi accelerated for the fourth consecutive month to 9.4 percent in March of 2021, reaching its highest level since April of last year. Food inflation peaked to an eight-month high of 11.7 percent from 10.3 percent in the previous month. At the same time, prices advanced faster for non-food inflation (6.9 percent vs 6.3 percent in February). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 1 percent, slowing from a 1.9 percent rise in the prior month.
