Retail sales in Macau rose 1.9 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2022, easing from a 4.6 percent rise in the previous quarter. It was the slowest growth in retail activity since the first quarter of 2021 as sales eased significantly at supermarkets (4.8 percent vs 17.9 percent in Q4 of 2021). Meanwhile, retail activity fell sharply at department stores (-2.8 percent vs 2.6 percent) particularly for watches, clock and jewellery (-1.3 percent vs 7.9 percent); communication equipment (15.3 percent vs 19.5 percent); and pharmacies (-0.6 percent vs 5.3 percent). Also, sales continued to fall for adult’s clothing (-11.9 percent vs -12.6 percent), cosmetics and sanitary articles (-11.3 percent vs -1.8 percent); motor vehicles (-27.2 percent vs -16.5 percent) and automotive fuels (-16.2 percent vs -15.1 percent).
