Retail sales in Macau rose 4.6 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2021,easing from a 86.5 percent rise in the previous quarter. It was the slowest growth in retail activity since the fourth quarter of 2020. Sales eased significantly at department stores (2.6 percent vs 102.5 percent in Q3), particularly for watches, clock and jewellery (7.9 percent vs 215.7 percent); communication equipment (19.5 percent vs 241.2 percent); leather goods (9.6 percent vs 181.3 percent); and pharmacies (5.3 percent vs 23.4 percent). Additionally sales fell for adult’s clothing (-12.6 percent vs 72.5 percent); cosmetics and sanitary articles (-1.8 percent vs 60.5 percent) and continued to decline for motor vehicles (-16.5 percent vs -24 percent) and automotive fuels (-15.1 percent vs -7.8 percent). On a quarterly basis, retail sales rose by 17.9 percent and considering the whole year of 2021, retail sales surged by 69.9 percent.

Retail sales in Macau surged 86.5 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2021, slowing from an all-time high of 219 percent increase in the previous quarter. Sales eased at department stores (102.5 percent vs 347.4 percent in Q2) and slowed significantly for watches, clock and jewellery (215.7 percent vs 1015.8 percent); communication equipment (241.2 percent vs 498.7 percent); leather goods (181.3 percent vs 521.6 percent); Chinese food products (140 percent vs 531 percent); adult’s clothing (72.5 percent vs 220 percent); pharmacies (23.4 percent vs 63.9 percent); and cosmetics and sanitary articles (60.5 percent vs 154.3 percent). Additionally, sales declined for motor vehicles (-24 percent vs 25.6 percent); motorcycles and parts (-25.4 percent vs 7.9 percent); and automotive fuels (-7.8 percent vs 19.1 percent). On a quarterly basis, retail sales declined by 22.6 percent.
