Manufacturing confidence in Italy dropped to 109.3 in May of 2022, the lowest since April of 2021, compared to 109.9 in April and forecasts of 109. It marked the sixth consecutive month of falls in business confidence, as surging prices and uncertainty in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine weigh. Manufacturers gave a less favourable assessment of order books (5 to 5.7) and evaluated inventories to have risen (0.3 from -0.8) while expectations for future production were little changed (7 from 6.9).

Italy Business Confidence Eases Slightly
Manufacturing confidence in Italy eased to 110 in April of 2022 from the downwardly revised 110.1 in the prior month, the lowest in 12 months and in line with market expectations amid surging prices and uncertainty in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine. Respondents' assessment of manufacturing declined for expectations of orders (4.9 vs 5.3 in March), and economic conditions (-34.8 vs -34.5). Also, current assessment deteriorated for order book levels (5.8 vs 7.3) and stocks of finished products (-0.9 vs -0.4). The composite business index, combining surveys of manufacturing, retail, construction, and services, was slightly higher at 105.5 from a downwardly revised 105.3 in March.
