Hong Kong Posts 2nd Largest Current Account Surplus
Hong Kong’s current account surplus widened to HKD 96.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021, the second largest surplus in the series history, from HKD 33.4 billion in the same period of the previous year and accounted for 12.8 percent of GDP. The goods account swung to a surplus of HKD 41.4 billion, from a deficit of HKD 5.7 billion in Q4 of 2020 and the services surplus widened to HKD 23.6 billion from HKD 13.3 billion a year earlier. At the same time, the primary income surplus expanded to HKD 35.5 billion from HKD 30.1 billion. Meanwhile, the secondary income gap increased to HKD 4.4 billion from HKD 4.3 billion. Considering the whole year of 2021, the current account surplus was $321.6 billion, accounting 11.2 percent of GDP.

Hong Kong Q3 Current Account Surplus 2nd Largest on Record
Hong Kong’s current account surplus narrowed to HKD 96.7 billion in the third quarter of 2021, the second largest surplus in the series history, after a record HKD 99.9 billion in the same period of the previous year and accounted for 13.2 percent of GDP. The goods account surplus shrank to HKD 4.2 billion, from HKD 32.7 billion in 2Q 2020 and the services surplus widened to HKD 33.5 billion from HKD 24.5 billion a year earlier. At the same time, the primary income surplus expanded sharply to HKD 63.8 billion from HKD 47.5 billion, while the secondary income gap increased to HKD 4.8 billion from HKD 4.7 billion.
