Retail sales in Germany slumped 5.4% month-over-month in April of 2022, the biggest fall in a year and much worse than market forecasts of a 0.2% decline, on rising prices, especially for food, and as lockdowns in China exacerbated supply problems. Food sales fell by a record 7.7% and non-food sales declined by 4.4%, namely sales of textiles, clothing, and shoes (-4.3%) and sales at department stores (-7%). Purchases at petrol stations were also lower. On the other hand, online sales and mail-order retailing increased by 5.4%.
