The manufacturing climate indicator in France edged up to 110 in August of 2021, from a downwardly revised 109 in the previous month and above market expectations of 109. That was the highest level since May 2018, well above its long-term average of 100. Business managers have improved their opinion on past production (22 vs 16 in July) and prospects increased on both personal production (23 vs 19) and workforce size (8 vs 6). Meanwhile, the views on book orders deteriorated (-8 vs -4) and optimism regarding the overall production outlook also weakened (16 vs 20). The balance on the expected trend in selling prices, which had dropped last month after several months of sustainable growth, has straightened a little in August (27 vs 25).

The manufacturing climate indicator in France rose to 110 in July 2021, from an upwardly revised 108 in the previous month and above market expectations of 107. That was the highest level since April 2018, boosted by improvements in the balances of opinion on the overall and foreign order books, as well as the balance on the personal production expectations. Meanwhile, the general production prospects deteriorated and the balance on the expected trend in selling prices has fallen back after five months of sustained increase.

The manufacturing climate indicator in France was unchanged at 107 in June of 2021, the same as in the previous month and slightly lower than forecasts of 109. Still, the reading remained above its long-term average of 100 for the third consecutive month. Order books increased slightly (-9 vs -10 in May) and the general production outlook also improved (27 vs 19). However, expectations for selling prices reached the highest level ever (30 vs 25).

In France, Business Climate measures industrial entrepreneurs’ sentiment about current business situation and expectation about business conditions. The survey sample comprises about 4,000 enterprises in the manufacturing and mining industries. The indicator is calculated using factor analysis technique. The index is then calculated in a way to measure the current sentiment in relation to the historic index values of the period 1993-2011. A value over 110 indicates unusually high optimism and a value under 90 indicates unusually high pessimism. The value 100 indicates neutrality.
