Exports from China rose 19.3% yoy to USD 282.66 billion in July 2021, below market estimates of 20.8% and slowing from a 32.2% jump in June. Still, this was the 13th straight month of growth in outbound shipments, amid easing foreign demand due to the rapid spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 in some countries, higher raw materials, extreme weather, and persistent logistic bottlenecks. Exports grew from the US (13.4%), the EU (17.23%), the ASEAN countries (14.52%), and Australia (9.32%).

China Exports Rise More than Expected in June
Exports from China surged 32.2 percent year-on-year to USD 281.42 billion in June 2021, above market consensus of 23.1 percent and after a 27.9 percent gain in May. This was the twelfth straight month of growth in outbound shipments, as high commodity prices and solid foreign demand offset local COVID-19 outbreak, and logistic bottlenecks including the temporary Shenzhen port closure. Sales increased for refined oil products (66 percent); unwrought aluminium and products (29.8 percent); and steel (74.5 percent) but fell for grains (-20.5 percent). Export growth to the US slowed to 17.8 percent in June, while rising sharply to Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea.

China Exports Rise Less than Estimated
Exports from China grew by 27.9% yoy to USD 263.92 billion in May 2021, easing from a 32.2% surge in April and compared with market consensus of 32.1%. This marked the eleventh straight month of increase in outbound shipments, as more countries reopened their economies although higher raw material costs, global chip shortage, logistics bottlenecks and lower capacity in Guangdong due to the coronavirus outbreak weighed on sales. Exports increased for unwrought aluminium and products (15.6%), steel products (19.8%) and rare earth (45.6%) but fell for grains (-34.3%) and autoprocessing products and parts (-4%). Exports from all major trading partners rose: Japan (5%), South Korea (29.9%), Taiwan (31.3%), the EU (12.6%), the US (20.6%), Australia (1.4%), and ASEAN (40.6%). Considering the first five months of the year, exports jumped 40.2%.

Export growth has been a major component supporting China's rapid economic expansion. In 2019 China's exports increased 0.5 percent, slowing sharply from a 10 percent rise in 2018, with sales to the US falling sharply amid ongoing trade tensions. Machinery and transport equipment accounted for 48 percent of total exports, in particular electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances (14 percent), telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment (12 percent), office machines and automatic data processing machines (8 percent), and general industrial machinery and equipment, and machine parts (5 percent). Other major export categories were: miscellaneous manufactured articles (23 percent) on the back of furniture and parts thereof (3 percent); manufactured goods classified chiefly by material (16 percent) such as textile yarn, fabrics, made-up articles (5 percent), manufactures of metals (4 percent) and iron and steel (2 percent); chemicals and related products (6 percent); and food and live animals (3 percent). The EU and US were the largest destinations of China's shipments, accounting for 17 percent of exports each, followed by Hong Kong (11 percent), Japan (6 percent), South Korea (4 percent), Vietnam (4 percent), Germany (3 percent), India (3 percent) and the Netherlands (3 percent). The UK, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Russia, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines accounted for 2 percent each.
