China Industrial Capacity Rate Rises Slightly
The industrial capacity utilization rate in China rose to 77.1 in the third quarter of 2021 from 76.7 in the same period a year earlier, as a recovery in the economy from the COVID-19 disruption continued. The utilization rate rose for all categories: mining (76.9 percent vs 73.9 in Q3 2020); manufacturing (77.3 percent vs 76.3 percent); and electricity, heat, and gas, water (75.3 percent vs 72.8 percent). In the June quarter of 2021, the industrial capacity utilization rate was at a record high of 78.4 percent. In the first three quarters of the year, the capacity utilization rate was at 77.6, up 4.5 percentage points from the same period of 2020.

The industrial capacity utilization rate in China jumped to record high of 78.4 percent in the second quarter of 2021 from 74.4 percent in the same period a year earlier, as a recovery in the economy from the COVID-19 disruption gained momentum. The utilization rate rose for all categories: mining (76.1 percent vs 72.1 in Q2 2020); manufacturing (78.8 percent vs 74.8 percent); and electricity, heat, and gas, water (74.7 percent vs 70.6 percent). In the March quarter of 2021, the industrial capacity utilization rate was at 77.2 percent. In 2020, industrial capacity utilization was 74.5 percent, down 2.1 percentage points from 2019.
