Investment in Canadian Securities Soars in March
Foreign investors acquired C$46.9 billion of Canadian securities in March of 2022, following an upwardly revised C$7.5 billion in the previous month. It was the 20th straight month of net purchases from foreigners and the second highest on record, solely behind that of April 2020. Foreign investors acquired a net C$32.9 billion in Canadian debt securities, with C$30.3 billion of investments in Canadian bonds, most of which through corporations. At the same time, non-resident investors increased their exposure to the Canadian equity market by C$14.1 billion. Meanwhile, Canadian investors decreased their holdings of foreign securities by C$24 billion, the second largest net decrease on record, widening from the upwardly revised C$9.9 billion reduction in the previous month.

Investment in Canadian Securities Eases in February
Foreign investors acquired C$7.4 billion of Canadian securities in February of 2022, following an upwardly revised C$13.5 billion in the previous month. It was the 19th straight month of net purchases from foreigners, albeit the smallest increment since March of 2021. Foreign investors acquired a net C$8.5 billion in Canadian debt securities, with C$16.8 billion of investments in Canadian bonds, mainly through corporations. On the other hand, non-resident investors decreased their overall exposure to the Canadian equity market by C$1 billion. Meanwhile, Canadian investors decreased their holdings of foreign securities by C$9.7 billion, easing from an upwardly revised C$11.4 reduction in the previous month, mainly due to sales of US shares.
