Exports account for more than 30 percent of Canadian GDP. In 2018, Canada main exports were: energy products (19 percent); motor vehicles and parts (15 percent); consumer goods (11 percent); metal and non-metallic mineral products (11 percent); forestry products and building and packaging materials (8 percent); farm, fishing and intermediate food products (7 percent); industrial machinery, equipment and parts (7 percent) and basic and industrial chemical, plastic and rubber products (6 percent). The US is by far the largest destination for Canadian products (74 percent of total exports); followed by the EU (8 percent), of which Germany (3 percent), China (5 percent) and Japan and Mexico (2 percent each).

Canada Exports Hit New High
Exports from Canada surged 6.3 percent over a month to a fresh record high of CAD 63.6 billion in March of 2022, above market forecasts of CAD 61.76 billion. Shipments rose in 9 of 11 product sections, with higher prices playing again a major role in the overall increase. Main upward pressure came mostly from energy products (12.8%), which accounted for over a quarter of exports in March, while exports of non-energy products rose at a slower 4%. In particular, overseas sales of metal ores and non-metallic minerals jumped 19.4%, namely potash (+22.5%). Demand for Canadian fertilizers has increased since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the resulting sanctions that have been imposed on trade with Russia, pushing Canadian exports of potash to record levels. Shipments of motor vehicles and parts increased by 7.9%, reflecting higher manufacturing activity throughout North America.

Canada Exports Beat Expectations, New All-Time High
Exports from Canada climbed 2.8 percent over a month to a fresh record high of CAD 58.7 billion in February of 2022, above market forecasts of CAD 58.05 billion. Shipments rose in 8 of 11 product sections, with higher prices playing a major role in the overall increase. Main upward pressure came mostly from energy products (7.8%), which accounted for over a quarter of exports in February, while exports of non-energy products saw a much more modest increase (1.2%). In particular, sales of aircraft and other transportation equipment & parts bounced back robustly (54%), mainly private jets and commercial aircraft. Still, the rise in exports was capped by a sharp contraction in consumer good shipments (-11.4%), weighed down by a slump in pharmaceuticals.
