Brazil's nominal budget deficit shrank to BRL 29.7 billion in August 2021 from BRL 121.9 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, as the central government gap narrowed sharply to BRL 53.7 billion from BRL 127.0 billion a year earlier. At the same time, the regional government surplus widened to BRL 23.9 billion from BRL 5.9 billion in August of 2020, while state-owned enterprises posted a surplus of BRL 67 million, compared to a deficit of BRL 786 million in August of 2020.
