Belgium Current Account Swings to Surplus in Q1
Belgium’s current account switched into a surplus of EUR 2,514 million in the first quarter of 2021 from a deficit EUR 306 million in the corresponding period of 2020. The service account swung to a surplus of EUR 1,622 million from a EUR 605 million deficit, while the goods account surplus narrowed slightly to EUR 2,049 million from EUR 2,092 million. Additionally, the primary income surplus widened to EUR 1,377 million from EUR 499 million and the secondary income gap went up to 2,534 million from EUR 2,292 million.

Belgium Current Account Swings to Deficit in Q4
Belgium’s current account swung into a deficit of EUR 306 million in the fourth quarter 2020 from a surplus of EUR 556 in the corresponding period of 2019. The services account reversed to a deficit of EUR 605 million from a EUR 312 million surplus, while the goods account surplus widened to EUR 2,092 from EUR 1,304 million. In addition, the primary income surplus shrank to EUR 499 million from EUR 577 million and the secondary income gap went up to EUR 2,292 million from EUR 1,638 million. Considering the full 2020, the current account turned negative, having recorded a deficit of EUR 682 million from a surplus of EUR 1,663 million in 2019.
