The consumer confidence indicator in Belgium declined to 5 in August 2021, from a 20-year high of 8 in the previous two months, as prospects regarding the general economic situation deteriorated sharply (5 vs 19 in July). Also, households appeared to be more pessimistic about their future financial situation (0 vs 2), while they have also revised downwards their savings intentions (21 vs 23). On a brighter note, fears of a rise in unemployment over the coming twelve months receded (8 vs 11).

The consumer confidence in Belgium remained at 20-year highs of 8 in July of 2021, similar to the last month level. The macroeconomic outlook for the next twelve months remains unchanged compared to June (19), and households still regard it as particularly good. At the same time, consumers appeared more optimistic about the unemployment in Belgium (11 from 13 in June, close to the pre-pandemic level). Conversely, consumers are slightly less optimistic about both the financial situation of households (2 from 4) and savings (23 from 24).

Belgium Consumer Confidence Recovers in May
The consumer confidence indicator in Belgium rebounded to 4 in May of 2021, from -6 in April of 2021, the biggest gain on record. Consumers were optimistic about the economic situation in Belgium in the next twelve months ( 9 from -2 in April), amid easing lockdown measures for the summer. Similarly, unemployment expectations improved ( 21 from 43) and households are planning to save even more (25 from 20), while expectations regarding their financial situation were little changed.
