The annual food price inflation in Australia climbed to 4.3 percent in the March quarter of 2022 from 1.9 percent in Q4. This marked the highest reading since Q3 2011, as consumption accelerated further as the economy fully reopened following a ramped-up in the COVID-19 vaccination campaign. Prices rose faster for most categories, including bread (2.6% vs 0.5% in Q4), beef and veal (12.1% vs 8.1%), dairy & related products (4.1% vs 1.8%), food products n.e.c(4.2% vs 1.6%), oils and fats (8.6% vs 5.4%), cakes & biscuits (2.2% vs 2.2%), pork (3.3% vs 0.7%), eggs (1.5% vs 0.1%), cheese (3.3% vs 2%), other cereal products (7.3% vs -1.3%), jams, honey, and spreads (2.2% vs 0.5%), ice cream and other dairy products (4.6 % vs 2.2%), vegetables (12.7% vs 6.1%), coffee, tea, cocoa (8.2% vs 1%), water, soft drinks, juices (6.4% vs 2.2%), meals out and take away foods (2.6% vs 2.4%), and restaurants meals (2.8% vs 2.7%).
