The National Bank of Romania kept its benchmark interest rate on hold at 2.5 percent on October 3rd 2018. The deposit and lending facility rates were also kept unchanged at 1.5 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively. Consumer prices in Romania increased 5.1 percent year-on-year in July, compared to 4.6 percent in the prior month. However, policymakers underscored that inflation is projected to drop further towards the target of 3.5 percent at the end of this year. Also, economic growth is seen recovering in the second quarter of 2018 (4.1 percent from 4 percent in Q1), mainly due to higher household consumption and a deceleration in imports growth.

Romania’s current account deficit increased to EUR 1,053 million in August of 2018 from EUR 167 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. The goods and services gap widened to EUR 638 million from EUR 310 million a year earlier and the primary income deficit rose to EUR 620 million from EUR 391 million. Also, the secondary income surplus narrowed to EUR 206 million from EUR 534 million in August of 2017.
