Paraguay Interest Rate at 5.50 percent


The central bank of Paraguay held the benchmark interest rate unchanged at 5.50 percent in its May 24th meeting, as expected. The decision was unanimous. The last time policymakers changed rates was in July of 2016, when they cut the monetary rate by 25 bps. The policy statement underscored that Brazil’s context remains uncertain. It also highlighted that inflation remains within the 4.0 percent target. Consumer prices in Paraguay increased 3.6 percent year-on-year in April of 2017, following a 2.8 percent rise in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate in four months. However, policymakers saw this upturn caused by a few products.
