The Nikkei Japan Manufacturing PMI dropped to a 15-month low of 52.2 in November 2018 from 52.9 in October but higher than a flash figure of 51.8. Production growth eased and new orders rose at joint-weakest rate in just over two years as weaker demand from China and Europe limited the expansion despite rising orders from other Asian markets such as South Korea and Taiwan. Meanwhile, employment continued to grow at a solid pace and input buying accelerated in November. On the price front, input cost inflation was close to October's 91-month peak while output charges rose at slightly slower pace. Looking ahead, business optimism eased for a sixth straight month to the lowest in two years. Manufacturing PMI in Japan is reported by Markit Economics.

Japan Manufacturing PMI

The Nikkei Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index measures the performance of the manufacturing sector and is derived from a survey of 400 industrial companies. The Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index is based on five individual indexes with the following weights: New Orders (30 percent), Output (25 percent), Employment (20 percent), Suppliers’ Delivery Times (15 percent) and Stock of Items Purchased (10 percent), with the Delivery Times index inverted so that it moves in a comparable direction. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion of the manufacturing sector compared to the previous month; below 50 represents a contraction; while 50 indicates no change.
