German industrial output fell unexpectedly by 0.5 percent month-on-month in October 2018, missing market expectations of a 0.3 percent rise and following a downwardly revised 0.1 percent gain in September. It was the first monthly drop in industrial production since July, as output declined for consumer goods (-3.2 percent), energy (-3.2 percent) and construction (-0.3 percent). Meantime, there were increases in production of capital (0.3 percent) and intermediate goods (0.2 percent). Industrial Production Mom in Germany averaged 0.09 percent from 1991 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 4 percent in August of 1993 and a record low of -6.90 percent in January of 2009.

Manufacturing is the most important sector and accounts for 79 percent of total production. The biggest segments within Manufacturing are: machinery and equipment (12 percent of total production); motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (12 percent); basic metals and fabricated metal products (10 percent); and computers, electronic and optical products and electrical equipment (10 percent). Construction accounts for 11 percent of total output; and energy production accounts for 10 percent.
