Dominican Republic Inflation Rate at 4.63 percent


The annual inflation rate in Dominican Republic increased to 4.63 percent in June of 2018 from 4.47 percent in May. It was the highest inflation rate since October of 2013, as prices advanced further for food & non-alcoholic beverages (5.38 percent from 5.02 percent in May); transport (7.17 percent from 6.84 percent) and housing (6.10 percent from 5.90 percent). Also, cost rose faster for furnishings (1.54 percent from 1.50 percent); health (3.79 percent from 3.69 percent) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (6.58 percent from 6.50 percent). Meanwhile, prices slowed for miscellaneous goods & services (3.02 percent from 3.12 percent); recreation & culture (2.03 percent from 2.50 percent); restaurants & hotels (2.24 percent from 2.27 percent) and education (5.21 percent from 5.24 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.21 percent, easing from a 0.26 percent in the previous month.

The economy of Dominican Republic grew 7.3 percent year-on-year in June 2018, quickening from a 6.4 percent advance in the previous month. Growth was mainly boosted by gains in: manufacturing (6.6 percent vs 6.2 percent in May); services (6.0 percent vs 5.0 percent), of which financial services (9.0 percent vs 1.2 percent), internal trade (9.8 percent vs 7.8 percent) and transportation (7.8 percent vs 6.0 percent); and agriculture (8.2 percent vs 5.7 percent).

The central bank of Dominican Republic increased its benchmark interest rate by 25 bps to 5.50 percent on 31 July 2018. Policymakers underscored inflation climbed to 4.63 percent year-on-year in June 2018, from 4.47 percent in the previous month and hitting the highest level since October 2013, remaining above the target range (4.0 percent ± 1.0 percent). They also mentioned the impact of higher oil prices. The bank also added that economic activity remains running above potential; credit remains growing; and fiscal policy is on target to reach a primary surplus.
