Consumer prices in Dominican Republic increased 3.11 percent year-on-year in May of 2017, easing from a 3.51 percent rise in the previous month. It is the lowest inflation rate since January, as prices increased less for transport (6.74 percent vs 8.74 percent in April), housing and utilities (3.43 percent vs 3.90 percent), miscellaneous goods and services (2.85 percent vs 2.91 percent), furniture and household equipment (0.78 percent vs 0.84 percent), health (3.50 percent vs 3.58 percent), education (5.48 percent vs 5.51 percent) and communication (2.60 percent vs 3.26 percent). In addition, cost fell further for clothing and footwear (-3.99 percent vs -3.39 percent). In contrast, prices rose faster for food and non-alcoholic beverages (2.52 percent vs 2.49 percent), restaurants and hotels (1.61 percent vs 1.55 percent) and recreation and culture (0.62 percent vs 0.33 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices decreased 0.14 percent compared to a 0.27 percent increase in April.

The central bank of the Dominican Republic kept its benchmark interest rate steady at 5.75 percent at its May 2017 meeting. Policymakers pointed that annual inflation for April was 3.51 percent, remaining within the target range (4.5 percent ± 1.0 pp.) and it is expected to stay at this level during the policy horizon. Economic activity continues to expand and the GDP is expected to grow between 5.0-5.5 percent in 2017.
