Burundi Inflation Rate at -5.60 percent


Consumer prices in Burundi declined 5.6 percent year-on-year in December of 2018, after falling 7.3 percent in the prior month. It is the eleventh straight month of deflation, as cost continued to decrease for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-15.1% vs -18.4% in November), namely bread & cereals (-20.4% vs -24.5%); vegetables (-21.8% vs -24.9%) and fruits (-1.2% vs 0.2%). Meantime, prices slowed for: housing & utilities (10.6% vs 10.8%); health (9.7% vs 10.6%); clothing & footwear (5.1% vs 6.2%); recreation & culture (3.9% vs 5.0%); miscellaneous goods & services (6.4% vs 9.4%); furnishings & house equipment (4.2% vs 5.7%); education (1.6% vs 2.8%); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (3.6% vs 5.5%). In contrast, cost advanced slightly faster for transport (7.4% vs 7.3%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices were up 1.1 percent, after increasing 1.2 percent in the preceding month.
