Swiss Inflation Rate Steady at -1.4% For The Third Month


Consumer prices in Switzerland decreased by 1.4 percent year-on-year in October of 2015, the same pace as in the previous month and matching market expectations. A higher decline in housing and utilities, was enough to offset a lower drop in food and transport costs.

Compared to October 2014, cost of housing and utilities went down by 3 percent (from -1 percent last month); food and non-alcoholic beverages declined by 0.6 percent (-1.3 percent in September); cost of transport decreased by 5.0 percent (-5.1 percent in September). Meanwhile, prices of leisure and culture went down by 2.0 percent (-2.2 percent in September); restaurants and hotels (-0.2 percent). By contrast, prices of education (+1.4 percent) and clothing and footwear (+0.2 percent) increased.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased by 0.1 percent in October, following the same growth in the previous month, mainly due to higher prices of clothing and footwear (+5.5 percent); leisure and culture (+0.3%); transport (+0.2 percent); Meanwhile, cost of food (-0.5 percent); restaurants and hotels (-0.3 percent), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (-0.2 percent); housing (-0.1 percent) declined.
