Australian Unemployment Rate Down to 5.6% in September


In September, Australia's adjusted unemployment rate decreased 0.2 percentage points to 5.6 percent. The number of unemployed persons decreased by 14.7 thousand to 697 thousand.

The seasonally adjusted participation rate decrease 0.1 percentage points to 64.9 percent. The number of employed persons increased 9.1 thousand (0.1 percent) to 11.65 million. Full-time employment increased 5.0 thousand to 8.13 million and part-time employment increased 4.1 thousand to 3.51 million. 

The employment to population ratio, which expresses the number of employed persons as a percentage of the civilian population aged 15 years and over, remained steady at 61.2 percent.

Despite the slight increase in total employment, seasonally adjusted aggregate hours worked decreased 6.4 million hours in September 2013 to 1,641.5 million hours.
