Brazil Unemployment Rate at 5% in August


Brazilian jobless rate edged up slightly to 5 percent in August from 4.9 percent in July. Yet, it is the lowest rate for an August month ever.

The number of unemployed people was flat at 1.2 million in August. Meanwhile, employment rose 0.8 percent over July to 23.1 million people and average real wages increased 1.7 percent to R$ 2022.4.

Among regions, Salvador recorded the highest unemployment rate (9.3 percent) and Rio de Janeiro the lowest (3 percent). In São Paulo, the jobless rate increased to 5.1 percent.

The country’s statistical office IBGE also released data for May, June and July, following a nearly 3-month strike that affected the release of labour market figures.
