Turkey Unemployment Rate Rises to 10.2% in June


The unemployment rate in Turkey increased to 10.2 percent in June of 2016 from 9.6 percent a year earlier. Non-farm unemployment also rose to 12.2 percent from 11.7 percent and the jobless rate among those aged 15 to 24 went up by 1.7 percent to 19.4 percent.

The number of unemployed persons went up by 247 thousand to 3127 thousand and employment increased by 390 thousand to 27651 thousand. The non-agricultural sector added 811 thousand jobs while the farm sector lost 421 thousand: employment increased in services (by 2.1 percentage point) and construction (by 0.2 percentage point) but fell in agriculture (by 1.8 percentage point) and industry (by 0.4 percentage point). According to the distribution of employment by sector, 20.2 percent was employed in agriculture; 19.3 percent in industry; 7.5 percent in construction and 53.1 percent in services. 

In addition, the number of people in the labour force rose by 637 thousand to 30778 thousand and those detached from the labour force increased by 231 thousand to 27908 thousand. The participation rate went up to 52.4 percent from 52.1 percent a year earlier. 

The unemployment rate usually rises from June to January due to seasonal factors. In May, it was lower at 9.4 percent. On a seasonally adjusted basis, unemployment went up by 166 thousand persons and employment fell by 222 thousand in June compared with the previous month.
