Turkish Unemployment Rate Steady at 8.8% in June


In June of 2013, Turkish unadjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged from May’s reading of 8.8 percent. Compared with the same month last year, the jobless rate is up by 0.8 percentage points. Employment rate also improved in June and increased to 47.4 percent, from 46.8 percent a year ago.

Compared with the same month last year, the number of unemployed people increased by 299 thousand persons in June of 2013 and reached to 2 million 525 thousand. Non-agricultural unemployment rate reached 11 percent and youth jobless rate was realized at 17.1 percent, 1.4 percentage point higher than a year ago.

The number of employed people increased by 742 thousand persons compared with the same period of the previous year and reached 26 million 319 thousand people in June of 2013. Agricultural employment decreased by 81 thousand people and non-agricultural employment increased by 823 thousand people. Employment in services increased by 0.8 percentage point, industry grew by 0.5 percentage point while that of agriculture decreased by 1 percentage point and construction dropped by 0.1 percentage point.

Year-on-year, the ratio of people who worked without any social security related to the main job declined to 37.8 percent (2.6 percentage point decrease) in June. The share of people who did not have any social security in agriculture decreased from 84.3 percent to 83.5 percent and that in non-agriculture decreased from 25.2 percent to 22.9 percent.
