Swiss Jobless Rate Edges Up to 3.2% in August


Swiss unadjusted unemployment rate increased to 3.2 percent in August of 2016 from 3.1 percent in previous two months and slightly above market estimates of 3.1 percent, as the number of unemployed and jobseekers were up.

In August, there were 142,858 unemployed persons enrolled at the regional employment centers, about 3,548 more persons (+2.5 percent) than in the previous month. Compared to the same month a year earlier, unemployment increased by 5,875 persons (+4.3 percent). 

The number of jobseekers reached 201,989, a decrease of 2,642 persons compared with July while it increased by 9.320 compared with the same period last year (+4.8 percent).

Youth unemployment (15 to 24 year old) increased by 3,533 persons (+20.7 percent) to 20,640. Compared with August 2015, this represents an increase of 81 people (+0.4 percent).

Adjusted for seasonal factors, the unemployment rate stood at 3.4 percent, up from 3.3 percent in the preceding two months.
