Tanzania Inflation Rate Steady at 6.4%


Consumer prices in Tanzania increased 6.4 percent year-on-year in August of 2015, the same pace as in the previous month.

Compared to August 2014, food prices rose 10.2 percent, after increasing 10.6 percent in July, while housing, water, electricity and gas cost edged up 0.2 percent (the same growth in July). Additional upward pressures came from: clothing and footwear (+5.3 percent); furnishings and household equipment (+1.9 percent); restaurants and hotels (+5.2 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (+1.8 percent); alcoholic beverages and tobacco (+2.6 percent); transport (+0.9 percent). In contrast, communication cost decreased 0.4 percent.

Annual core inflation rate was recorded at 2.2 percent.

On a monthly basis, the consumer price index increased by 0.02 percent, down from a 0.4 percent rise in July, due to decrease in a food cost (-0.4 percent compared to +0.3 percent last month). Housing, water, electricity and gas cost edged up 0.5 percent, clothing and footwear prices grew 0.7 percent, furnishings and household equipment cost rose 0.2 percent, transport prices increased by 1.4 percent. While communication fell 0.1 percent.
