South Africa GDP Growth YoY at 6-Year Low



South African economy expanded 1.2 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2015, slowing from a 2.1 percent growth in the previous period, the worst performance since the recession in 2009.

The mining sector increased the most by 4.7 percent, but slowing from a 6.3 percent rise in the first quarter. Finance, real estate and business activities grew at a faster 3.1 percent (2.7 percent in the first quarter). In addition, construction and transport, storage and communication both increased 1.6 percent (1.9 percent and 2.4 percent respectively in the first quarter).

In contrast, agriculture, forestry and fishing fell 12.3 percent, manufacturing fell 0.1 percent and electricity, water and gas production fell 0.7 percent. 

Considering the first six months of 2015, the economy expanded 1.6 percent compared with the same period in 2014.
