Turkish Jobless Rate Rises to 9.4% in May 2016


Turkish unemployment rate edged up to 9.4 percent in May 2016 from 9.3 percent a year earlier, as the number of unemployed rose by 106 thousand to 2.895 million. Non-farm unemployment went down to 11.3 percent from 11.4 percent while youth unemployment rate rose to 17.4 percent from 17 percent.

The number of unemployed persons rose by 106 thousand to 2.895 million from 2.789 million a year earlier and employment went up by 795 thousand to 27.867 million. The non-agricultural sectors added 1.290 million jobs while the farm sector lost 234 thousand. According to the distribution of employment by sector; 19.9 percent was employed in agriculture, 19.3 percent was in industry, 7.7 percent was in construction and 53.1 percent was in services. Employment in services increased by 1.6 p.p. and construction increased by 0.5 p.p. while agriculture decreased by 1.4 p.p. and industry decreased by 0.7 p.p.. 

The number of persons in the labour force increased by 902 thousand to 30.763 million compared with 29.861 million the same period of the previous year. Labour force participation rate was recorded at 52.5 percent, 0.8 p.p. higher than 51.7 percent a year earlier. 

On a seasonally adjusted basis, unemployment rose by 146 thousand persons and employment fell by 4 thousand in May compared with the previous month.
