Turkish Unemployment Rate Down to 8.8% in May


In May of 2013, Turkish unadjusted unemployment rate decreased to 8.8 percent, the lowest value in nine months. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the jobless rate is up by 0.6 percentage points.

Compared with the same month last year, the number of unemployed persons increased by 254 thousand persons in May of 2013 and has reached 2 million 526 thousand persons. Non-agricultural unemployment rate was realized as 11 percent with 0.6 percentage point increase and youth unemployment rate was realized as 16.6 percent with 0.7 percentage point increase.

In May of 2013, employment rate increased to 47.1 percent, from 46.3 percent in  the same period of the previous year.

The number of employed persons increased by 848 thousand persons compared to May of 2012 and has reached to 26 million 130 thousand persons in May of 2013. Agricultural employment decreased by 80 thousand persons and non-agricultural employment increased by 928 thousand persons.

Employment in services increased by 0.8 percentage point, industry increased by 0.5 percentage point while that of agriculture decreased by 1.2 percentage point and construction decreased by 0.1 percentage point.

Labour force participation rate was realized as 51.6 percent.
