France Inflation Rate Unchanged in July


The annual inflation rate in France remained steady at 0.5 percent in July of 2014, the same rate as the previous month. Prices of manufactured goods and fresh food fell due to seasonally effects, but there was an increase in cost of accommodation, package holidays and transport and communication.

Year-on-year upward inflation pressures were driven by prices of tobacco (5.0 percent yoy), energy (0.7 percent), housing rentals and services for dwellings (1.4 percent), medical services (0.3 percent), transport and communication (1.5 percent). In contrast, prices fell for food (-1.4 percent), clothing and footwear (-1.8 percent), medical products (-3.0 percent), and petroleum products (-1.5 percent).

On a monthly basis, the consumer prices index fell 0.3 percent in July of 2014, after it remained almost unchanged from May to June. Prices declined for food (-0.5 percent), clothing and footwear (-13.4 percent), medical products (-0.3 percent), and other manufactured products (-0.9 percent).

In July of 2014, core inflation increased by 0.2 percent compared to June of 2014 and by 0.1 percent compared to July of 2013. The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices decreased by 0.4 percent in July 2014 on a monthly basis, and the annual rate stood at 0.6 percent.
